About us

In the Media Dome at Kiel University of Applied Sciences, guests become passengers. Because the dome's projection surface fills the entire field of vision, visitors are practically sitting in the middle of the images. The boundaries between reality and virtual reality become blurred - visitors don't just see, they feel themselves flying through space or hurtling through dizzying loops in the extraterrestrial roller coasters of the "Spacepark 360". Every quarter, the Mediendom has between 25 and 30 different shows in its program, ranging from adult education to children's stories.

One focus is on astronomical themes about the depth, beauty and special features of space. But thanks to its versatile projection technology, the Mediendom can also tell children's stories, explain complex things clearly or turn music into a holistic experience.

Together with partners such as the European Space Agency (ESA), Kiel University (CAU) and the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design Kiel, the Mediendom has already produced a number of its own shows that have been successful both nationally and internationally. Several of Kiel's dome shows have been awarded international design prizes.

Organizationally, the media dome is part of the "Center for Cultural and Scientific Communication" at Kiel University of Applied Sciences.

For students on the Multimedia Production course, researching and developing virtual reality effects for the dome is an integral part of the curriculum. The media dome makes Kiel University of Applied Sciences one of the most sought-after places to study in Germany for prospective multimedia producers. In the field of immersion, i.e. the deliberate blurring of the boundary between reality and virtual reality, the Mediendom and its team occupy a leading position in Europe.

With more than 40,000 visitors a year, the Mediendom has become an attraction that has anchored Kiel University of Applied Sciences in the Dietrichsdorf district and reconnected the former outlying district of Dietrichsdorf with Kiel's city center.
